The word Reiki means universal life energy. The word consists of two parts. The syllable
rei describes the universal, boundless aspect of this energy while ki is in itself parts of
rei, being the vital life force energy which flows through all living beings.
Many races, cultures, and religions have always been aware of the existence of an
energy which corresponds to the meaning of ki. Thus ki is named:
• Chi by the Chinese
• ight or Holy Ghost by the Christians
• Prana by the Hindus
• Mana by the Kahunas and
• Bioplasmic Energy by the Russian researchers
The Usui system of Reiki has been rediscovered and defined by Dr. Mikao Usui in the
mid 19th century based on healing traditions of ancient Sanskrit sutras.
The Usui method of natural healing, as taught by Hawayo Takata, involves three levels
or degrees. As soon as a practitioner has been initiated, the healing energy begins to
flow. Level 1 Reiki connects the practitioner to the Reiki channel. Level II Reiki teaches
the practitioner long distance or remote healing, and Level III Reiki initiates the
practitioner to become a Reiki Master and teacher. Each level requires its own set of
attunements. Reiki initiations are for life.
